Intentions :
«[T]his study sought to identify key differences between parents who obtain (acceptors) and parents who refuse (non-acceptors) the HPV [human papillomavirus] vaccine for their daughters.» (p. 322)

Questions/Hypothèses :
«[W]e hypothesized that uptake of the HPV vaccine would be related to greater perceived susceptibility of daughters to HPV infection, greater perceived severity of the infection, greater perceived benefits of the vaccine, fewer perceived barriers, and more cues to action. Second, as found in previous HPV vaccination acceptability literature, we hypothesized that individual factors (such as positive general vaccination attitudes and anticipated inaction regret - e.g., worry about regretting not obtaining the vaccine), behavioral factors (including adherence to routinely recommended vaccination), and social factors (including positive media exposure and social norms), would also be associated with vaccine uptake.» (p. 323)

3. Résumé

«Our study displayed mixed findings regarding parental knowledge. Although our univariate analyses found no effects of HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge on uptake, our multivariate model found knowledge to have a negative impact on vaccine uptake. These mixed findings may be due to constricted variance as it was common for parents to have low knowledge about HPV. Indeed, even in our qualitative findings, both parents who accepted and refused the HPV vaccine expressed having little to no knowledge about HPV. Although conceptualized as a critical factor in enabling informed decisions, the role of HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge in parental vaccination decision making remains unclear with some studies showing a positive relationship and others showing no or negative relationships. Research limitations such as the inconsistent use of validated measures across studies, or differences in conceptualization of knowledge constructs, may contribute to these mixed results. However, regardless of the role of knowledge in vaccine decision-making, parents do express wanting more information about HPV in order to be confident in their decisions. As such, parents are likely to be receptive to interventions that include an educational component. In line with our second hypothesis, the results of this study show that other factors not directly included in the HBM (such as anticipated regret) were also associated with vaccination uptake.» (p. 325)

3. Résumé

«Patients born outside Canada comprised almost half of the patients surveyed in our study; given that immigrants make up 37.6% among adults aged 25–44 in the Montreal area, they appear to be over-represented in the fertility patient sample that we studied. The fact that immigrant patients sought fertility treatment in such large numbers may reflect the high value placed upon children in their countries of origin. [Immigrants] were less likely to seek treatment for secondary infertility compared to Canadian-born patients. This was particularly true of immigrants who had been resident in Canada for 5 years or less. As length of stay in Canada increases, immigrants appear to exhibit rates of secondary infertility and employment that resemble those of Canadian-born patients. This suggests that acculturation may be playing a role in access to fertility treatment among first-generation Canadians. It is also possible that among Canadian-born patients and more established immigrants, public funding permitted them to consider expanding their families, while for more recent and lower income immigrant patients, such coverage permitted them to seek treatment for the first time.» (p. 1038)

Possible reasons for delayed infertility treatment seeking among immigrants may include financial, cultural or linguistic barriers and limited knowledge or awareness about infertility and/or the availability of ART services […].» (p. 1038)

«The overall objective of this study was to identify which theoretically based factors differentiate between women who do not intend to receive the HPV vaccine, who intend to receive the HPV vaccine, and who have been vaccinated.» (p. 686)

3. Résumé

«The current study adds to a growing body of literature on factors that are associated with HPV vaccination decision-making, while using theory driven frameworks. From a theoretical perspective, understanding the relationship between intentions and actual behavior is of utmost importance. From a practical perspective, it is critical to understand the factors that influence young women’s vaccination behavior, given the rapidly emerging evidence of HPV-related diseases combined with the relatively low rates of vaccination uptake in many jurisdictions. The findings of this study suggest that trusted individuals (e.g., doctors, friends, family) are of particular importance in motivating young women to receive the vaccine beyond other factors of the HBM and TPB.» (p. 691) The authors emphasize «[t]he influence of peers and parents [which] is also critical in affecting young women’s vaccination decisions. It is important to educate not only young women, but also their parents and peers about the safety, efficacy, and importance of the HPV vaccine in order to increase HPV knowledge and to facilitate conversations about the vaccine.» (p. 690)
