Intentions :
« We will examine their (teen mothers) considerations in relation to issues around birth control, pregnancy, and creating a family. We will also explore how agencies working with this population might be informated by these considerations. » (p. 85)

Échantillon/Matériau :
31 mères adolescentes provenant de deux centres : Albany Teen Center et Linden Place Young Parents Program. Elles viennent de milieux défavorisés et sont d’origines ethniques variées.

Instruments :
Guide d’entretien semi-directif et observation participante faites par un professionnel de recherche. Les entrevues portent sur « l’histoire de la mère», soit sa grossesse et ses conséquences, sa relation avec le père de l’enfant, sa relation avec sa famille et ses plans pour le futur. Les entrevues sont vidéoenregistrées et transcrites afin d’être codées à l’aide du logiciel Folioviews

3. Résumé


« The dominant discourse around teen pregnancy and mothering sees it as a mistake and those who opt for it as misguided, reckless, and ill prepared. Yet few studies actually examine the considerations of young mothers themselves. Drawing on data from interviews with young women, we examine their considerations around getting pregnant, choosing motherhood, and negotiating new family patterns. We argue that, far from seeing the conception and birth of their child(ren) as an error, these young women often welcomed their pregnancies and were actively engaged in negotiations with boyfriends, fathers of their children, their own families, and their boyfriends’ families to create support structures for themselves and their children. We examine some of the implications for practice that acknowledges and respects the young women’s choices around sexuality and reproduction. » (p. 83)
