Fiche synthèse

1. Objectifs

Intentions :
« This thesis focuses mainly on the stories of those former refugees who were interviewed recently. [...] It is about those who allowed themselves to go back and remember a past that was traumatic and to share their experiences of the last twenty years with me. In doing so, it was inevitable that we would touch on issues that were painful and that have left their emotional scars. » (p. 3)

Questions/Hypothèses :
« What have these people done with their lives in the past twenty years? Did the government do enough to help them in their transition periods? Do they feel that the government abandoned them after their year of sponsorship was over? How did the women, in particular, deal with the issues of family conflict, culture shock, and the education of their children as well as themselves? How did their new communities accept them in later years? Where do they live now? What languages do they speak? What religions do they embrace? How are they doing financially? » (p. 2)

3. Résumé

« The purpose of this study is to revisit some of the initiatives undertaken by the Canadian government in their Refugee Resettlement Program. As such, it provides a forum for the ’former refugees’ to tell us what has happened in their lives in the past twenty years. The specific focus of the thesis is on the former Indochinese refugees, or ’boat-people’, who arrived in Ste.Thérèse, Québec between the years 1979-1982.
Issues that will be addressed include government sponsorship, resettlement and adaptation, education, family structure and language.
Recommendations are included on how the Canadian government could improve its Refugee Resettlement Programs in order to enhance the lives of ’refugees’ so that they can work towards becoming productive and happy members of our Canadian society. » (p. iii)
