Fiche synthèse

1. Objectifs

Intentions :
« The purpose of this study was to evaluate, with the participation of those concerned, patients experiencing MI [myocardial infarction] and stroke, their spouses or family caregivers, nurses, and investigators, the usefulness of a Family Systems Nursing approach based on CFAM [Calgary Family Assessment Model] and CFIM [Carlgary Family Intervention Model] for families dealing with CCVD [cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases]. » (p. 15)

2. Méthode

Échantillon/Matériau :
« Five families dealing with CCVD participated in the study: A group of two families with a family member who had a MI and a group of three families with a family member who had a stroke. For the MI group, the two families were recruited from participants in a secondary prevention cardiology program by the practicing nurse who led the program and who participated in the study, For the stroke group, the three families were recruited by physicians from a rehabilitation unit. Only the patient and his or her spouse or main family caregivers were selected to participate in the study. Based on a purposeful sampling strategy (Patton, 1990), the participants were selected deliberately for their capacity to express their views and their willingness to be critical of the family nursing interventions under study. » (p. 16)

3. Résumé

« The purpose of this study was to evaluate Family Systems Nursing interventions using a methodological approach based on Guba and Lincoln’s fourth generation evaluation. The project involved five families in which one member had suffered either a myocardial infarction or a stroke. In this participatory study, family members, patients, nurses, and investigators were considered coresearchers in the research process. Thus, families collaborated with investigators and nurses to develop and evaluate Family Systems Nursing interventions based on the Calgary Family Assessment and Intervention Models. This article presents the research methodology and results that offer practical nursing interventions to help families during the patient’s rehabilitation process. » (p. 12)
