Fiche synthèse

1. Objectifs

Intentions :
« Thus, our major objective was to assess the relationship between this set of six infant (i.e., birth weight, perinatal illness severity), mother (i.e., anxiety and level of education), and contextual (i.e., received support and perceived helpfulness of support) factors and mother-VLBW [very low birth weight] infant interaction. » (p. 26)

Questions/Hypothèses :
« We tested the hypothesis that the infant, mother, and contextual factors would explain significant and unique portions of the variance in the interactive behavior of VLBW dyads. Based on previous studies, we hypothesized that interactions would be more sensitive and responsive when the infants’ birth weights were higher and perinatal illness severity was lower, when mothers were less anxious and better educated, and when mothers’ received support and perceived support were higher. » (p. 26)

2. Méthode

Échantillon/Matériau :
« The final sample of 72 participants [mothers] represented 47% of the potentiel eligible sample (n = 153). » (p. 26)

Instruments :
- Nursing Child Assessment Teaching Scale (NCATS);
- Revised Nursery Neurobiologic Score (NBRS);
- State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the state portion;
- Support in Parenting (SIP).

Type de traitement des données :
Analyse statistique

3. Résumé

« This prospective study examined how characteristics of infants (i.e., birth weight and perinatal illness severity), mothers (i.e., anxiety and level of education), and the social context (i.e., maternal received and perceived helpfulness of support) related to mother-very low birth weight (VLBW) infant interaction in 72 dyads. [...] Dyads whose interaction was more sensitive and responsive included mothers who were better educated and less anxious at 3 months and reported higher perceived support at 3 months. The findings highlight the importance of maternal education and well-being in the parenting of VLBW infants. » (p. 24)
