3. Résumé


The author concludes that «[…] the level of consumption on the part of these families was already at a minimum when the Depression occurred. In these conditions, the extra restraints that they had to impose on themselves in the matter of food and housing, among other things, seriously affected the welfare, if not the actual health, of family members and especially impinged women in regard to their working conditions and their own subsistence. Obviously, the search for makeshifts to allow families to be fed, clothed, and housed despite a loss of income fell to the housewife.» (p. 237)
