Fiche synthèse

1. Objectifs

Intentions :
«[T]he present study sought to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a parent-mediated program to address families’ urgent need for support while waiting for more intensive, specialized services. Specifically, it investigated various feasibility indicators for the implementation of P-ESDM [parent-mediated Early Start Denver Model]: demand and retention, parents’ implementation fidelity, and coaches’ perception of the implementation and it also assessed the acceptability of the intervention from parents’ and coaches’ perspectives.» (p. 2)

3. Résumé

Authors found that «[p]arents’ teaching skills did not attain fidelity. Despite these results, it is important to highlight that most parents developed their knowledge and improved their intervention strategies to better meet their child’s needs. Similar improvements were observed in recent studies […], although the mean fidelity score of our sample was lower at baseline. The difficulty in achieving the set criterion for fidelity may be due to parents’ often very high levels of stress and distress post diagnosis […].» (p. 10-11) «Overall, the present study demonstrated the feasibility, at an organizational level, of implementing a parent coaching and training program based on the P-ESDM during the post-diagnostic period. Its implementation is consistent with the available resources and personnel within the proposed service providers, that is, organizations within Quebec’s public network of primary health and social services. Program recipients and staff alike deemed the intervention acceptable: the service satisfied existing needs and its value was commensurate with families’ time and energy investment.» (p. 11)
