1. Objectifs


Intentions :
«This study aimed to better understand parent experiences of raising bilingual/multilingual children to help guide clinical recommendation. Specifically, this study explored what parents did to help their children acquire languages and what motivated those decisions, how fluent parents wanted their children to be in each language, and what advice parents received from professionals or others.» (p. 67) This research also intends «to see if living in a city with two majority languages [Montreal] had an impact on parent experiences.» (p. 62)

2. Méthode


Échantillon/Matériau :
L’échantillon total est composé de 34 parents canadiens (29 mères et 5 pères) et de 75 enfants. Parmi les parents, 21 participants résident dans la ville de Montréal avec leur famille.

3. Résumé


The results show that «parent experiences varied greatly between parents in all categories examined […]. [That variables] such as the status of the languages spoken, and the location of the family may also affect parent experiences. Many parents thought of the experience as positive, but a large number also spoke about it being very stressful and difficult, with many parents acknowledging that a large challenge was to ensure enough exposure to each language.» (p. 74) «The responses given by parents were [also] analysed to see if parents living in the Montreal area […] had different experiences to those living in other areas of Canada […]. [In this regard, the data] were generally similar, but a few differences stood out and are worth noting: When asked what their experience had been raising a bilingual child, many parents brought up different emotions.» (p. 62) Based «on the experiences shared […], there do seem to be some differences between families living in Montreal, with two majority languages, and parents living elsewhere in Canada, where there is one majority language. For Montrealers, experiences seem to be both more positive and more stressful, language concerns are not thought to be directly related to bilingualism as often, good proficiency in two or more languages language is achieved.» (p. 64)
