Intentions :
«The present study used a qualitative analysis of interviews with gang-affiliated young men to explore their perceptions and experiences of gang life in terms of sexual exploitation, violence towards young women, gender relations, and romantic and sexual relationships. Our goal was to uncover the underlying affective, sexuality-related, and indentity-related aspects of their relationships with women.» (p.1)

L’échantillon compte dix jeunes adultes entre 18 et 25 ans de Montréal, membres ou anciennement membres d’une gang de rue.

3. Résumé


The authors noticed that «[t]he participants found it difficult to talk about their personal experiences, particularly when discussing sexuality and gender relations. […] Generally, they dissociated themselves from all violent acts towards young women, even if they had participated in domineering gang behaviours of been accused of violence associated either with a gang or in a love or sexual relationship. […] Our findings illustrate the gap between the sexual experiences of gang members and the committed romantic relationships that the majority of the young men hoped for. An intimate relationship requires a certain amount of sensitivity and emotional proximity […]. There attributes are not valued by gangs or, in some cases, by the gang members’ families.» (p. 11-12). À noter que les participants reproduisent une forme de violence issue des gangs dans leur relation de couple. Par contre pour certains, ces relations et l’idée de paternité les aident toutefois à se distancer de leur gang. Les auteurs montrent aussi que l’environnement familial de ces jeunes est souvent marqué par la violence et une absence flagrante de discussion concernant la sexualité. L’image paternelle forte et masculine, transmise dans ces familles, est aussi reproduite à travers la violence sexuelle perpétrée par les jeunes des gangs.
