Fiche synthèse

1. Objectifs

Intentions :
«This study examined the relationship between adherence of children with ADHD to pharmacotherapy and their parents’ knowledge, and attitudes regarding ADHD [Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder] medication. It also investigated the impact of an intervention aimed at increasing parental knowledge regarding medication on children’s adherence.» (p. 4)

2. Méthode

Échantillon/Matériau :
«Parents of 24 children diagnosed with ADHD and recommended for pharmacological treatment were randomly assigned to watch either a video containing specific information about ADHD medication (specific intervention group, n=12) or a video containing general information about ADHD (nonspecific intervention group, n=12).» (p. 4) «Twenty-three of the twenty-four subjects came from the Montreal Children’s Hospital Pediatric ADHD Clinic and only one came from the Jewish General Hospital’s Childhood Disorders Day Hospital. Only one parent or caregiver of each child was asked to participate in the study.» (p. 20)

Instruments :
Questionnaire

Type de traitement des données :
Analyse statistique

3. Résumé

«The specific intervention was successful at increasing positive attitudes of parents towards medication. However, the effectiveness of the specific intervention relative to the non-specific intervention at improving adherence was not significantly different. This may be in part due to the relatively small sample size. In addition, the adherence rates in this study were markedly higher than those reported previously, which may be due to non-specific factors inherent to both intervention groups, such as, weekly contact with research staff, service provided at tertiary medical facilities and the utilization of video interventions.» (p. 4) «The findings from the present study suggest that the specific information intervention increased the subjects’ positive attitudes towards medication without appreciably increasing their knowledge. However, the findings do not support the increased effectiveness of the specific intervention relative to the non-specific intervention at improving adherence to pharmacotherapy […].» (p. 31)
