3. Résumé


Le cinquième chapitre de l’ouvrage traite des Italiens de Montréal, plus particulièrement du rôle de l’institution familiale dans cette communauté culturelle. L’auteur affirme que «[t]he central institution of Italian society is family. [A] man’s social status as a person with honour is closely linked to his ability to maintain or improve the economic position of his family and to safeguard the purity of its women.» (p. 93) C’est en ce sens qu’il écrit que «Italian-Canadians, especially immigrants, hold a set of values that incorporate the belief that their overriding moral obligation is to assist their family, even if they do so at the expense of others. As most persons feel and act this way, non-related families regard each other with deep suspicion: the very strength of the bond between family members of a family isolates them from other similar groups. […] There is, therefore, competition and a good deal of hostility, jealousy and backbiting between individual families as well as between associations.» (p. 105) L’auteur aborde également la question des tensions qui habitent la communauté, notamment entre les différentes générations d’immigrants italiens.
