3. Résumé

«This thesis examines the lives of children and youth from baixa renda (lowincome) households in a small market town in northeast Brazil. [...] In the context of economic precariousness and resource scarcity, financial insecurity and dependency represent a liability for the young people of baixa renda and many learn at a young age the importance of assuming an active role. “Tem que ajuda” (one has to help) is the term used both to explain and describe this moral and material imperative. It refers to notions of necessity, responsibility, honour and mutuality. Children’s contributions include working within the household, engaging in wage employment, migration, school, and investing in patron relationships. By contributing to their household they help ensure its sustainability, at the same time securing their social position as household members. By reducing their vulnerability to exclusion and displacement, they are able to exercise greater independence in the pursuit of their own life goals and aspirations.» (p. iii-iv)
