3. Résumé

« Despite the mandated rights in the UN Convention, many persons with intellectual disabilities, as parents, continue to suffer discrimination and rarely receive assistance that is appropriate or adequate to meet their needs (Goodringe, 2000; Tarleton, Ward, & Howarth, 2006). Furthermore, people with intellectual disabilities are exercising their right to become parents and then having their parental rights terminated and their children taken away (Booth, Booth, & McConnell, 2005a, 2005b). » (p. 189) In this chapter, the authors present the building blocks of their strategy and the development of standards of practice to overcome these problems. According to the authors, progress has been made in the area, as they work towards reducing the gap between research and practice.
